Issey Collection

The Issey Collection features surfaces are faceted and fluted with recurring patterns and are finished in either matt, dark brown or satin cream glaze to highlight their silhouettes.

Memories of Issey Miyake’s spectacularly pleated material creations are folded into the carved surfaces. There are also echoes of brutalist architecture, Wedgwood’s black basalt Jasperware and hints of French antiquities at play in this pottery collection.

Issey captures a sense of the handmade refinement epitomized in the work of its namesake, as well as celebrating the pure and simple delight of presenting food-laden dishes to share.

Carinated Vessels

Inspired by neolithic pottery from the Orkney Islands, each unique vessels in this collection assumes a carinated form. Carinate refers to the point where a rounded base is connected to inwardly sloping sides, akin to a ship's keel.

Pots have taken this shape throughout history and across cultures. Through travel, trade and conquest pottery has conveyed ideas and traditions, across place and time. The pieces in this collection are contemporary mementos of this history. The partially obscured graphic marking invite curiosity, hinting at hidden depths and past events.

Objects for contemplation, as well as use.

Standard Ware

A collection of tableware made from warm-toned, high-fired stoneware clay and finished in a complimentary palette of matt and satin glazes. Each piece is individually handmade by the artist, with comfort, tactility, and daily use in mind.

Microwave and dishwasher safe.

Standard ware is a phrase coined by the Leach Pottery in the 1920’s and refers to handcrafted, yet uniformed, batches of tableware that have been refined over many iterations and years.

Morris Collection

A wordsmith, philosopher and textile designer of the American Arts and Crafts movement, William Morris celebrated the home by combining beauty with domestic functionality.

Paying homage to his philosophy, this collection is comprised of pots with specific functions - batter bowls, butter keepers, oil cruets and utensil holders.

Made from high fired white stoneware and finished in a satin, cream glaze, each piece strikes a balance between the organic fluidity of hand-thrown pottery and clean-lined minimalism.

  • TESTING

I test my standard pottery ware on a regular basis. When new work is developed, ceramics pieces are put through their paces in several ways, recommended by ceramic educators. The wares are tested for leaching; thermal shock; microwave safety and porosity; and the ability to withstand alkaline dish washing detergents. These tests take place in a home environment rather than a laboratory given the non-commercial nature of production.

    FOOD SAFETY

The high fired stoneware clay body is vitrified meaning these pieces are non-porous and the glazes do no leach. There is no food safe certificate for handmade pottery but my family and I have eaten from my dishes with confidence for over twenty years.

    MATT GLAZES

The matt appearance of a glaze is the result of tiny pinholes in the glazed surface. These tiny holes tend to 'colour' with use, particularly from the tannins in tea and coffee. I like this change as it represents the aging of the piece and the patina of a life of use. The colouring of the used surface can, however, be lessened with an overnight soak and scrub with vinegar.

    CARE

All my pottery is microwave and dishwasher safe. While stoneware pots can go in the oven, please be aware that thermal shock, due to sudden changes in temperature, can cause cracks. It is advisable to heat and cool the piece with the oven.

I do not offer a repair service myself but there are people skilled in ceramic repair and the Japanese craft of Kintsugi. There are also ceramic glues on the market and a plethora of online advice if you are keen to give it a go yourself.
